TEMPO Lab. EA4542 has been created in 2010. In the field of sustainable transportation and mobility, the scientific identity of the laboratory is centred on vehicle or infrastructure reliability and energy management. The research activities aim to impact three major societal challenges: Energy and environment, Safety, security & Reliability, Mobility and Logistic. The staff, composed of 40 permanent members and 42 non-permanent members (in average 15 Post Doc and 25 PhD student) is divided in 3 teams:

• Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfert (DF2T).
• Materials, Surfaces, Forming (MSM).
• Production, Services, Information (PSI).

TEMPO is strongly involved in National and European scientific project frameworks (ANR, FUI, Interreg IV, FP7) and also develops scientific projects with strategic industrial partners, particularly with i-Trans, the competitive cluster for sustainable transportations. The laboratory leads the task  “Reliable and safe materials and structures » in CISIT, the International Campus on Safety and Intermodality in Transportation, one of the strategic projects supported by the regional council Nord Pas de Calais (20007-2013). TEMPO is also involved in the cluster MEDEE (Motors and Electrical Devices for Energy Efficiency). Within the Technological Research Institute (IRT) RAILENIUM, researchers of the laboratory develop projects in the work packages WP1 (Materials and Processes) and WP6 (Data Processing and Human Machine Systems).

TEMPO targets high scientific upstream research and a good adequacy with regard to the socioeconomic needs, trough investment in heavy height equipment useful for producing original research.  TEMPO is part of the Carnot Institute ARTS since 2011. The Carnot Institute ARTS, led by the French high education engineering school Arts & Métiers Paristech and its valorisation organization called ARTS, gathers 25 research labs and 1250 researchers and PHd’s, through a strong partnership with 12 research organization partners including University of Valenciennes and CNRS. The Carnot Institute ARTS has been granted for a second five-years period in 2011 in the framework of the PIA national program “Investissements d’Avenir”.

Highly involved in transports, Health and energy domains, the Carnot ARTS Institute is organized in 3 major research fields corresponding to TEMPO research teams:

• Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Processes (MSM);
• Fluids and energetic systems (DF2T);
• Design, industrialization, risk, decision (PSI)

TEMPO is part of the Sustainable Transport and Mobility Centre.
