The CÉRAMATHS mathematics department seminar will welcome François Goichot (UPHF, CÉRAMATHS) at 2pm on Thursday, October 9, 2025, for the following talk:

Mathematics in the year 500

How was mathematics done in the High Middle Ages? We'll get an idea from excerpts of Boethius' Arithmetic, written around 500 A.D. And we'll see the evolution from Euclid's mathematics (300 B.C.).
. I'll also talk about how I've been able to tackle this subject with secondary school pupils, L1 students and master's students in teaching.
There are no mathematical prerequisites for this talk; nor is it necessary to be able to read Latin.
