The CERAMATHS Mathematics Department seminar will welcome Juliette Chabassier (Pianoteq) at 2pm on Thursday, January 23, 2025, for the following talk:
.Different formulations of wave equations to model and simulate musical instruments
Musical acoustics is the discipline that seeks to explain the physical functioning of musical instruments. It is based on an approach linking experimental science, mathematical modeling and computer simulation techniques. Musical instruments are highly complex, involving couplings between a variety of physical phenomena. This talk will begin by reviewing the problems encountered in modeling and simulating musical instruments, focusing on the purpose of physical models, their strengths and weaknesses, and the issues at stake in the context of sound synthesis or instrument making. Finally, we'll look at some original numerical strategies for tackling the nonlinear aspects present in instruments, based on a generalization of the mixed formulation for nonlinear equations. We conclude with some sound illustrations applied to the piano.
