The INSA Hauts-de-France and the CERAMATHS mathematics department will host in June 2024 the Maths C pour L course driven by the Société Mathématique de France, the Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles and the Société Française de Statistique. This internship aims to discover many aspects of mathematical research from a variety of angles, and to make mathematical research opportunities attractive to a public, studentses who find it difficult to project themselves towards such careers

Students taking part in the Valenciennes internship have already been selected by the national group coordinating the Maths C for L internships for 2024. This page is intended for the practical organization of their internship

The internship will take place at INSA Hauts-de-France's Mont-Houy campus in Valenciennes

.

The appointment on Monday morning is at 9am (welcome from 8:30am), amphi 70E, bâtiment Abel de Pujol 2; it's n° 15 on this map; the entrance is just opposite the university restaurant
. See below for detailed schedule

You'll be staying at the Brit Hôtel - Notre Dame, 1 Place Abbé Thellier de Poncheville in Valenciennes, and sharing a room with another student (separate beds, of course). Breakfast will be taken on site, other meals on campus (except Sunday evening, see below, and Wednesday evening: meal at a restaurant in the city center, you will have the necessary indications).

To get from the station to the hotel : on foot, the route is here, it's 1.2 km. You can also take the streetcar (station just to the left as you leave the station), lines T1 or T2 direction Famars - Université and get off at the second station, Hôtel de Ville. The journey is then only 500m.

For your Sunday evening meal: this is the only one not covered by the course organization. You'll find fast food (Kebab, McDonald's and Dominos Pizza) around the station. If you prefer a real restaurant, it's on the Place d'Armes less than 500m from the hotel: Nachos (closes at 10pm), O'Tacos (at 10:30pm), Friterie Meunier (at 10:30pm), Café de Paris (11pm), Waffle Factory (6:30pm)...

To get from the hotel to the university : take the streetcar to Hôtel de Ville station (route above). Then take the T1 towards Famars -Université and get off
. - either at the penultimate station, Moriamez - Recherche, cross the tracks and continue along the line
- or at the terminus, cross the tracks and return along the line
. The journey takes 18 minutes, but the interval between trains is 12 minutes during the day. The T2 line, in the same direction, may also be suitable, but please note that trains do not run to the campus outside rush hour.
You will receive a letter in advance of your internship. Before your course, you'll receive a streetcar pass by post. You'll need to present it at one of the terminals in the trams each time you get on; please note that this is a "contactless" system, so the journey is debited as soon as you present the card.
Timetables are posted in the stations, so you'll be able to get on and off at any time. Timetables are posted in stations, or you can consult the Transvilles website. Please note that the last tram leaves the university at 9.10pm.

At the same time as Maths C for L, there will be a MathC2+ course for second-year students. Both courses will be held in neighbouring lecture theatres, so all you need to do is follow the signposting set up for this second-year course, which can be easily spotted with the image opposite

The precise schedule for the course is here. As a reminder, you are invited to arrive from Sunday 9, afternoon or early evening. The course will end on Friday 14th after lunch.

One of the leisure activities will require some walking on uneven terrain, so bring a suitable pair of shoes
