On the difficulty of acting in the collective interest in environmental matters - the case of global warming

The most famous game structures used in the field of static and repeated non-cooperative game theory (prisoner's dilemma, chicken game...) underline the difficulty of collaborating in the collective interest. Questions relating to the commons and collective goods can be classically addressed within this framework. Given that the climate is a commons, the fight against global warming, which can be considered a global public good, is of prime concern. The Conferences of the Parties (COPs), which have been held every year since 1995 to discuss the fight against CO2 emissions, can be seen as an annual repetition of a prisoner's dilemma or chicken game. What lessons can be learned from such an approach?
