Colloquium: Gender and archaeology
March 12 and 13, 2026
Valenciennes and Forum Antique de Bavay
The "Gender and Archaeology" symposium focuses on the concept of gender, applied to and in archaeology. It is part of a growing interest in the history of the place and role of women in relation to that of men in this discipline, in France and abroad, and in women as objects and subjects of archaeology. It thus aims to question how gender is taken into account by archaeologists when analyzing past societies made up of men and women, and by various cultural and educational professionals when valorizing the results of excavations, but also the place of women in the very masculine milieu of archaeologists, and even archaeological institutions.
