Conference: Law and Vulnerability—On the Reform of the Law Governing Protected Adults in Japan

Japan had made few reforms to its laws governing adults under legal protection (guardianship, curatorship) since World War II. The Japanese government established a commission to prepare a major reform aimed at addressing new challenges related to vulnerability. As a former member of this commission, Professor Yamashiro will outline the key aspects of this reform and discuss the decisions that were made. This lecture is intended for a broad audience, extending beyond the legal community, as it will address topics related to the autonomy of vulnerable individuals and the relationship between political authorities and “experts” (academics, judges, and doctors) in the legislative process.
