Conference " Monasteries and Gender in the Early Middle Ages: Spaces, Attendance, Veneration, Burial - An interdisciplinary approach combining texts, iconography, and archaeology"
as part of the ANR “DenMon” project
March 11 and 12, 2027, at Les Tertiales (Valenciennes)
Among the research questions addressed by the ANR project “DenMon ” (2026–2029)—which focuses on monasteries founded in the Early Middle Ages, their spatial organization, and their engagement with the outside world—includes the concept of gender. Gender can be defined as a category of analysis that refers to the study of the social and cultural construction of masculine and feminine identities and of the relationships between women and men, as specific to each society. We have chosen to place this at the center of our discussions during this conference.
