The figure of the transclass in literature through the prism of gender, ethnicity and sexuality

CRISS Axis 3 event " Identities : cultures, memories, valorisation "

Wednesday September 13, 2023

from 2pm to 5:30pm, Campus des Tertiales, Salle de Conférences

In Les transclasses ou la non-reproduction, Chantal Jaquet evokes homosexuality as a possible trigger for social mobility in certain people, joining Didier Éribon's work in this. While she touches on sexuality, the French philosopher omits, apart from a brief mention in the last lines of her essay, two dimensions that are probably just as important: gender and ethnicity. One of the aims of this study day is therefore to make these two aspects visible, and to measure their influence on the passage of social classes. Do girls do better than boys because they play the "school game" more often, as French data tend to show? On the other hand, aren't they subject to other constraints than men and, ultimately, confronted with a " glass ceiling " ? With the exception of a few studies, the ethnic question has rarely been taken into account in France. Does the mobility of these young people obey any particular specificities  Is it hindered by discrimination linked to their origins?
