"The impact of urban riots in France"
In June and July 2023, most regions of France experienced several days of urban riots. Our article explores the existence and magnitude of the potential negative effects of these riots on tourism in France.
More specifically, using national monthly data and at the NUTS2 regional scale, we construct a synthetic counterfactual of France and the main regions affected by the riots in order to measure the causal effect of the riots on tourism.
Did the riots have a negative impact on tourism in France in the short term? Is this effect more pronounced in the regions most affected by the riots? These are the questions we'll be answering.
