International Symposium - Seven Suns, Fiery Writings

This conference aims to explore the richness and diversity of representations of identity in Spanish-American literature through the works of Miguel Ángel Asturias (Guatemala), Jorge Luis Borges (Argentina), Isaac Goldemberg (Peru), Jorge Isaacs (Colombia), Luis Rafael Sánchez (Puerto Rico), Severo Sarduy (Cuba), and Manuel Zapata Olivella (Colombia). Although their career paths, aesthetic approaches, and historical contexts differ, all of them, in their own way, examine the relationships between cultures, memories, and the processes by which individual and collective heritages are valued. From the indigenous worldviews of Asturias to the Afro-descendant heritages of Zapata Olivella and Luis Rafael Sánchez, from the Jewish and diasporic identities in Goldemberg’s work to the interplay of hybridity and disguise in Sarduy’s, including Borges’s constructions of memory and Isaacs’s representations of the nation and its divisions, their works highlight the constitutive plurality of the Hispanic American sphere. This conference is an opportunity to pay tribute to Dorita Nouhaud, who recently passed away, whose translations and pioneering work contributed significantly to bringing these writers to the public’s attention.
