While the human sciences have abundantly described modernity as a process of increasing acceleration of social rhythms, this study day proposes to explore its opposite side: slowness. Far from being reduced to a simple slowing down or lack of efficiency, slowness appears as an ambivalent notion that can, depending on the context, be stigmatized or valorized.

By proposing to reconsider the discourses and practices associated with it, this day will question the multiple meanings of slowness: considered in turn as a constraint, as a resource, or even as a form of resistance.

How do societies, eras and disciplines construct slowness? What uses, representations and values do they attribute to it? Through a multi-disciplinary and diachronic approach, this study day will explore slowness in its practices, symbolic forms and cognitive dimensions.
