CHORUS

Human-drOnes cooperation for search and rescue in combat

The aim of the CHORUS project is to develop a system to assist in the supervision and control of a fleet of heterogeneous drones, dedicated to the search and rescue of injured personnel in combat zones. This system will adapt dynamically to the user’s profile, the drones’ capabilities and changes in the environment.

Introduction

Aerial drones are emerging as an indispensable tool in support of search and rescue operations.

An operation run jointly by the Army and the Armed Forces Medical Service could assist in the search for and location of the wounded in combat zones, build a comprehensive picture of the situation and relay this to the medical chain of command and operational command to determine the appropriate level of resources to be allocated for the rescue phase.

In the CHORUS project, aerial drones will also be used to deliver medicines or specialised equipment, overcoming topographical obstacles and speeding up the provision of care.

The use of drones requires consideration of scenarios involving highly automated drones capable of making partial decisions based on their environment.

The challenge is therefore to design levels of cooperation between humans, support systems and drones. The effects of these levels of cooperation and of system transparency will be studied, particularly in terms of the quality of the operator’s situational awareness and their workload.
