Looking back on 30 years of LAMIH

The LAMIH is delighted to have celebrated its 30th anniversary in the presence of Antoine Petit, President and CEO of the CNRS, Abdelhakim Artiba, President of the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France, and its territorial, academic and industrial partners.

A high point for the laboratory, looking back over 30 years of research and innovation, 30 years of collaborations, 30 years of openness to the world and 30 years of human adventures.

A lot of pride and emotion...

... when Laurent Dubar, Director of LAMIH, and Abdelhakim Artiba, President of Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France recall the major stages in the structuring of this laboratory and pay tribute to all those who have participated in its development under the successive directorships of Messrs. Jean-Claude Angué, Jérôme Oudin, Patrick Millot, Eric Markiewicz and Thierry-Marie Guerra.

An exceptional team that has always been responsive, resilient and forward-looking

Highlights...

When Antoine Petit (below left), President and CEO of the CNRS insists on "the excellence of this research unit at international level, around key themes for the future of the planet [...]. Major societal issues require this multidisciplinary approach" which LAMIH has. "You have been able to weave strong relationships with an economic fabric which is extremely important."

When Elisabeth Gondy (below right) representing the Hauts-de-France Region and Valenciennes Métropole recalls the territory's very strong commitment to the major technological challenges linked to transitions and LAMIH's driving role in this network of expertise.

the excellence of this research unit at international level, around key themes for the future of the planet [...]. The major challenges facing society require this multidisciplinary approach.

You have forged strong links with the economic fabric, which is extremely important.

30 ans Abdallah Asse

The LAMIH Automation Department was represented by Abdallah Asse, CEO of PROSYST. Researcher, company founder, today CEO and always innovating, such is Abdallah Asse who, as soon as he had his PhD in his pocket, created his company (1st Start Up resulting from the laboratory's research). Abdallah Asse came to talk to us about his experience as a company director, and reiterated his gratitude and attachment to LAMIH and, more broadly, to the university. Through the many internships he has hosted, the CIFRE theses he has financed, and as a bonus, as a major player in the creation of the University's first joint laboratory "SURFERLAB", a laboratory shared by LAMIH, PROSYST and BOMBARDIER, now ALSTOM Crespin. A member of various university bodies, including the Board of Directors, Abdallah Asse maintains a close link with his beloved university, and reflects on future projects in distributed intelligence for transport systems in the years to come.

30 ans Julien Richert

The LAMIH Mechanics Department was represented by Julien Richert, safety engineer at Mercedes Benz.

Julien Richert defended his thesis in 2007 and his subject concerned the development and production of a passenger airbag that adapts to the position and mass of the occupant. The work had been carried out in collaboration with the Mercedes Benz research center located in Germany near Stuttgart.

Hired directly by Mercedes after his doctorate, he has now been devoting his research to automotive safety for some twenty years, developing innovations, some of which are integrated into the ESF 2019 experimental vehicle. Julien Richert also illustrated the fruitful collaboration that has existed for over 20 years between LAMIH and Mercedes, with some 30 technological research diplomas and 7 doctoral theses to date.

30 ans Colombe Hérault

Colombe Hérault, Business and Solution Manager at Worldline, a French fintech and one of the world leaders in payment services, represented the IT department. Colombe Hérault told us about her studies at Valenciennes, including a PhD in software engineering. After a post-doc, she was hired as an R&D engineer, then project manager and then manager in the development of digital solutions for payment and digital identity.

.

Today Colombe Hérault pursues her activities in the development of digital trends with a major activity currently around Artificial Intelligence.

30 ans Stéphane Armand

Finally, Stéphane Armand, assistant professor at the University of Geneva, presented his background and research work aimed at "decoding human walking for personalized care", a theme dear to the Human and Life Sciences department, whose main mission is to understand, maintain and improve human mobility. Stéphane Armand recalled the impact that LAMIH has had both in France and abroad, as it was a pioneer in France in the field of automated gestures. He also pointed out that many of the people he had met during his doctoral work at the laboratory now occupy positions of responsibility still in the field, reinforcing the key position of the human in the activities. For Stéphane, LAMIH is a major player in the development of techniques and analysis of human movement, is also a player in the training of experts in human movement analysis and is fortunate today to have a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach within LAMIH.

.

This afternoon ended with cocktails and musical entertainment by the group Etienne & Co, while browsing the exhibition tracing major LAMIH projects and its roadmap.
