Short biography

Valentina E. Balas is currently a full professor at the Department of Automatic Control and Applied Software, Faculty of Engineering, "Aurel Vlaicu" University, Arad, Romania.

She holds a PhD in applied electronics and telecommunications from the Polytechnic University of Timisoara. Ms. Balas is the author of over 400 research papers published in peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences. Her research interests include intelligent systems, fuzzy control, soft computing, smart sensors, information fusion, modeling and simulation.

She is editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Advanced Intelligence Paradigms (IJAIP) and the International Journal of Computational Systems Engineering (IJCSysE), a member of the editorial boards of several national and international journals, and an evaluation expert for national and international projects and PhD theses.

Ms. Balas heads the Intelligent Systems Research Center at Aurel Vlaicu University in Arad and the International Relations Department at the same university.

She was general president of the Soft Computing and Applications (SOFA) international workshop, ten editions of which were organized between 2005 and 2022 in Romania and Hungary.

Dr. Balas has participated in many international conferences as an organiser, honorary chair, session chair, member of steering, advisory or international programme committees and keynote speaker.

She recently participated in an EU-funded national project: BioCell-NanoART = Novel Bio-inspired Cellular Nano-Architectures - For Digital Integra

She is a member of the European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology (EUSFLAT), a member of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and a senior member of the IEEE, a member of the Technical Committee - Fuzzy Systems (IEEE Computational Intelligence Society), chair of Task Force 14 of the Technical Committee - Emerging Technologies (IEEE CIS), a member of the Technical Committee - Soft Computing (IEEE SMCS). She is a committee member of the IEEE Romanian Section as Volunteer Training Coordinator and Vice-Chair of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Chapter CIS 11. During the 2021-2022 interval, she was a member of the ICT Working Group of the IEEE European Public Policy Committee. As of May 2023, Ms. Balas is an associate member of the Romanian Academy of Scientists.

Balas was vice president (awards) of IFSA - International Fuzzy Systems Association Council (2013-2015). She is co-secretary of the Governing Council of Forum for Interdisciplinary Mathematics (FIM), a multidisciplinary academic body, in India. She received the "Tudor Tanasescu" prize from the Romanian Academy for her contributions to fuzzy systems research. Tudor Tanasescu" prize from the Romanian Academy for her contributions in the field of soft computing methods (2019) and the "Stefan Odobleja" prize from the Romanian Academy of Scientists (2023), as well as the Diploma - Information Technology Section from the General Association of Engineers of Romania (AGIR) (2023).ted Circuits, 3M Euro from the National Authority for Scientific Research and Innovation.
