Title
Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO): a solution for sustainable mobility
Summary
Increasing energy demand, depleting oil resources and climate change have led to the need to look for sustainable alternative fuels. Fuels derived from biomass could be suitable substitutes for fossil fuels.
One of the easiest products to obtain by processing biomass is crude vegetable oil. Unfortunately, due to its physico-chemical properties, it cannot be used directly as a fuel for road vehicle engines.
One of the easiest products to obtain by processing biomass is crude vegetable oil.
To improve the physico-chemical properties of vegetable oil and make it suitable for use in vehicle engines, hydrotreating vegetable oil is a method of obtaining a diesel fuel called hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
The aim of this presentation is firstly to show the importance of replacing fossil fuels with new sustainable fuels which, in the current context of climate change, could mitigate environmental damage, given that the transport sector is a significant contributor to this phenomenon.
Specific aspects of HVO are also presented with regard to the production method, physical and chemical properties and performance of HVO-powered engines.
Keywords
Sustainable fuels, hydrotreated vegetable oil, decarbonization of transport.
