Title

From Traditional Digital Twins to Human-Centered Approaches in Industrial Virtual Applications.

Abstract

Modern industrial automation relies on high-performance fundamental control loops to orchestrate complex, multi-level manufacturing environments. Due to the decentralized architecture of contemporary factories, distributed management paradigms have proven to be highly effective. More specifically, multi-agent systems (MAS) have established themselves as a reference framework, using networks of autonomous and interactive entities to improve production agility, system throughput, and adaptive behavior. Driven by this need, this presentation initially focuses on the design of digital twins tailored to multi-agent industrial environments.

As we transition from pure automation to the Industry 5.0 philosophy, the technological focus is shifting toward symbiotic human-machine ecosystems in which technology enhances human capabilities. Within this unified framework, personnel supervise and influence decentralized operations through immersive digital environments such as virtual reality and augmented reality (VR/AR). Finally, we will conclude this presentation by introducing several concepts related to human representation in a digital world focused on health and industrial behavior.

Short Biography

He earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Federal University of Amazonas (1983–1987) after completing technical training in electronics at the Federal Technical School of Amazonas (now IFAM, 1980–1982).

He holds a “Lato Sensu” specialization in industrial automation from the Federal University of the State of Paraíba (now the Federal University of Campina Grande, 1990–1991), a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the same university (1991–1993), and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering (specializing in industrial automation and software engineering) from the University of Stuttgart in Germany (1998–2002).

After several years of professional experience in Manaus, he pursued an academic career at UFAM and IFAM.

Since 1991, he has been an associate professor at the Federal University of Amazonas; since early 2019, he has held the position of full professor. He teaches courses in the electrical engineering and computer engineering programs, both of which are part of the Faculty of Technology. He also holds a full professorship in the university’s graduate programs in electrical engineering (PPGEE) and computer science (PPGI) (doctoral and master’s programs).

He was a full professor at the Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of Amazonas (formerly ETFAM and CEFET-AM) from 1989 to 2012.

He served as a representative of the scientific community on the board of directors of the Amazonas State Research Support Foundation (FAPEAM) for four consecutive years beginning in August 2003, and since 2012 has served as the faculty representative (elected by his peers) on that institution’s research council.

He has experience in electrical engineering and computer science, with a specialization in embedded systems and software engineering, and has recently worked on the following topics: industrial automation systems, applications of cyber-physical systems, new applications for industry (Industry 4.0), software reuse techniques, applications for e-health and assistive technologies (e-health systems), smart environments, and ambient intelligence (for domestic and industrial use).

He has coordinated several research and development projects in these fields, with financial support from CNPq, FAPEAM, FINEP, SUFRAMA, and companies based in the Manaus industrial hub. He was awarded Senior Member status by the ACM in 2013, Senior Member status by the IEEE in 2014, and Senior Member status by the ISA in 2014.
