My research initially focused on developing a unified model of driver behaviour in road and rail driving when faced with critical situations, as part of the European FP7 project ‘Information Technologies for Error Remediation and Trapping Emergencies’ (ITERATE). In particular, I studied issues relating to vigilance and workload during driving operations. Furthermore, the topic of assessing resilience to the unexpected (linked to the operational safety of technical and human systems) led to the launch of an Exploratory Research and Innovation project by the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) entitled REACT: Reactivity to the Unexpected and Collective Reinterpretation of the Situation.
Since then, my research has continued to focus on the same objectives, but applied to the field of transport, and primarily to the rail sector. This has enabled numerous research contracts, supported by the flagship calls for proposals from the International Campus on Transport Safety and Intermodality (CISIT), followed by Eco-mobility, Logistics, Safety & Adaptability of Transport by 2020 (ELSAT2020), and subsequently RITMEA. This drive for innovation on behalf of businesses is fuelled by the Institut Carnot ‘Actions de Recherche pour la Technologie et la Société’ (ARTS) label, in which I am involved. Today, I am seeking to identify and develop Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that will improve the performance of transport modes (by optimising energy consumption) and networks (traffic regulation), whilst ensuring the highest possible level of safety for all users (taking account of risk across different levels of automation) in the field of rail transport. When these studies focus on open urban environments, the human factor must be taken into account at every stage of defining and designing these systems. The development of the Collaborative, Hybrid, Intermodal Land Transport – Rail Simulation Platform (PSCHITT-Rail) provides access to a unique tool for theoretical validation and for measuring practical acceptance by drivers. It should be noted that I am particularly involved in collaborative research with industry partners on the mobility and transport research theme at our university. In this context, I have had the opportunity to take part in numerous projects which have enabled me to develop a level of know-how and expertise that is now recognised through scientific collaborations on international projects.
The European CARBODIN project enabled me to explore the expectations of users (train drivers and trainers) when integrating new driver assistance systems based on emerging technologies. A large-scale European survey, with over 1,700 responses collected across 15 countries, followed by a more focused experimental protocol involving a panel of train drivers, led to the formulation of recommendations for the development and deployment of future innovative train driver’s cabs. This work resulted in one journal article and one international conference presentation.
Ultimately, the Academics4Rail project aims to define a new approach to designing and validating driver assistance systems based on Artificial Intelligence (AI), whilst taking into account constraints such as energy consumption, driver fatigue and driver attention. Three scientific themes are being studied: the level of automation, information and communication technologies, and the ‘human-in-the-loop’ concept. This work has already resulted in one journal article and three international conference presentations.

Europe FP7: IT for Error Remediation And Trapping Emergencies
In recent years, a variety of driver support and information management systems have been designed and implemented with the objective of improving safety as well as the performance of vehicles. While the crucial issues at a technical level have been mostly solved, their consequences on driver activity remains open and needs to be fully explained. Of particular importance are their effects on driver behaviour and strategies, and their impact on the operation and safety of the traffic system. The aim of the proposed project is to develop and validate a unified model of driver behaviour and driver interaction with innovative technologies in emergency situations. This model will be applicable to and validated for all the surface transport modes. Drivers’ age, gender, education and experience and culture are factors that will be considered together with influences from the environment and the vehicle. A unified model of driver behaviour will be of great use when designing innovative technologies since it will allow for assessment and tuning of the systems in a safe and controllable environment. At the concept stage, the model could guide designers in identifying potential problem areas whilst at the prototype stage, the model could inform on the scenarios to be used in system evaluation. In this way the systems will be better adapted to the drivers before being available on the market and will provide better support to the driver in emergency situations. Along the same lines, the model could be of use for authorities as a guide in assessing and approving innovative technologies without performing extensive simulator experiments or large scale field trials. As far as the proposes are aware, there has not to date been any research taking the bold step of attempting to create a unified model of driver behaviour applicable across the modes, still less a functioning piece of software to represent that model and the validation of that software.

Greener and Safer Rail Road Interactions

Car Body Shells, Doors and Interiors
The next generation of passenger trains will be lighter and more cost and energy efficient. This requires the use of composite technologies, which face barriers for full implementation, such as their high cost. The modular design of interiors and low-cost manufacturing of vehicle parts will be just as important. The EU-funded CARBODIN project will manufacture car body shell parts and lighter doors and improve the interior design of passenger trains. It will also combine different production techniques, automation concepts, introduction of co-cured and co-bonded composite parts, and multi-material integrated joints and inserts. In addition, predictive maintenance will be reinforced by testing intelligent sensor nodes. CARBODIN will also facilitate the design of attractive train interiors by developing a configuration tool based on virtual reality.
- 2023-2027 :
The European rail industry struggles with optimising research efforts and integrating technological advancements into practical applications. Despite significant investments, there is often a gap between scientific research and its implementation in railway systems. Additionally, the sector lacks a cohesive strategy for aligning research priorities with practical needs and future developments. Addressing these challenges requires a structured approach to knowledge exchange and collaboration. The EU-funded Academics4Rail project creates a stable scientific community dedicated to bridging these gaps. It facilitates the exchange of knowledge, enhancing both strategic planning and technical innovation. The project supports six PhD positions in critical areas, including aerodynamics, electromagnetic compatibility, and digital communications, fostering collaboration between academia and industry to drive advancements in railways.

Centre of Excellence in Railway Engineering
The project aims to establish the Centre of Excellence in Railway Engineering (CERES) at Poznan University of Technology to transform railway research and innovation capacity in Poland and wider in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region. While rail transport plays a vital role as Europe’s circulatory system for safe, sustainable, and efficient mobility, CEE countries remain significantly underrepresented in international railway R&I efforts. CERES addresses this gap by creating a world-class, autonomous and sustainable research centre focused on four strategic pillars: System Optimisation, Multimodality, Sustainability, and Inclusive and Personalised Service.
CERES will be formed through a strategic alliance with three leading European research institutions: Technical University of Berlin, University of Huddersfield, and Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France. The Centre will form a multidisciplinary team comprising internationally recognized scientists, conduct international cutting-edge research, train new generations of railway researchers and engineers, and foster strong industry-academia collaboration. The project includes a demonstative research initiative focused on creating Digital Twin models for predictive maintenance of urban transport system, using real-world data from Poland and Germany. Other key initiatives include the creation of a Railway Excellence Alliance, the launch of Open Science Railway Portal, and proactive contributions to EU priorities such as TEN-T, Rail Baltica, and the European Green Deal as well as national ones. The project includes comprehensive communication and dissemination activities to promote results and engage key stakeholders at national and international levels. The Centre will be empowered by organizational autonomy, robust governance, and complementary funding from national and European sources. Ultimately, the Centre will be resourced in long-term through industrial commissions and research grants. - 2002- :

FUI EcoVigiDriv
