International students work on decarbonizing a pharmaceutical company

Hosted at the University as part of a Blended Intensive Program ofthe German, Portuguese, Finnish students from the project EFEU have enriched their knowledge of industrial decarbonization. At GSK-Division vaccines, an internationally renowned company, they discovered optimizing a pharmaceutical company's carbon emissions and integrating new technologies that meet sustainability obligations.

The main objective of the program was to identify, with our industrial partner, an efficient and sustainable solution brought to replace the polluting gases currently used in vaccine freeze-drying. Specifically, we focused on the secondary vaccine production stages, including formulation, filling and packaging. Freeze-drying removes the water particles present in the vaccine, resulting in a form that can be stored more easily and for longer.

Thank you to GSK for your warm welcome and expertise!

The week was organized from June 09 to 13 by the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France in Valenciennes (France) with Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg Stuttgart (DHBW, Germany), Politécnico de Leiria (Portugal) and Metropolia Ammattikorkeakoulu Oy (Finland)partners in the EFEU project, with the support of Erasmus+.
