Infusion in neonatology: towards integrated, intelligent systems
The infusion systems currently used in neonatology are variations on adult systems and have not been the subject of specific studies to better adapt them to the problems of very premature infants. These issues relate to safety in terms of infectious risks, feasibility in terms of drug administration kinetics and, last but not least, adaptability to specific setups based on the characteristics of the premature baby.
.This UPHF - CHV - VYGON partnership project involves the numerical and experimental analysis of a "typical" neonatal infusion line, with the aim of understanding the role and operation of each of its components in a real-life situation. The results of these studies will enable us to propose new, integrated and intelligent infusion line designs, adapted to the needs of very premature infants, their families and the nursing staff.
.Several steps are required to achieve the design of integrated, intelligent perfusion systems:
- Study of the fluidic behavior of the infusion system, monitoring of on-line species concentrations and in vivo interaction,
- Development of control laws to optimize fluid mixing and delivery .
