Shift Towards Electrification and Sustainable Transport

My main research focus has historically been centered on the energy optimization of systems. It extends to several applications, such as trajectory optimization in transportation (energy management of vessels, brake emission limitation for railway applications) and active wake control.

In simulations, generating a state trajectory for the energy management of a hybrid vehicle involves solving an optimal control problem under state constraints (such as battery state-of-charge limits), with both discrete controls (gear selection, internal combustion engine on/off) and continuous controls (torque/power distribution between the internal combustion engine and the electric machine) to determine the minimum achievable energy consumption for a given vehicle on a predefined route. As part of a collaboration with TU Eindhoven (Netherlands), a study highlighted the existence of an infinite number of optimal solutions for a particular case but widespread application dealing piecewise linear models. This is the case when fuel consumption and/or the electric machine power is computed via interpolation in efficiency maps. The PhD thesis of M. Sanchez Pantoja, defended in December 2020, focused on the use of external penalty functions.

The abrupt transition imposed on manufacturers toward vehicle electrification has led me to redirect my research activities toward locally emission free transportation solutions. These efforts are partly carried out through multidisciplinary cross-disciplinary activities with the Mechanics department.

Active Wake Control for Automobiles

The first research focus is active wake control for automobiles. This work involves a collaboration between fluid mechanics specialists and control engineers, aiming to reduce vehicle energy consumption by minimizing aerodynamic drag through active control. My primary contribution lies in control techniques and my expertise in automotive applications.

In this context, a demonstrator equipped with actuators (pulsed air jets) has been developed. The scientific and technological challenges are numerous, ranging from the lack of exploitable models for control to the development of specific actuators.

The initial work focused on model-free control applied to the Ahmed body, as well as track and wind tunnel testing on the prototype vehicle. Ultimately, the aim is to develop unknown-input observers to dynamically estimate drag and regulate it via closed-loop control.

This collaboration has resulted in a co-supervised PhD thesis (B. Plumejeau, defended in 2020) and a CIFRE PhD with ALSTOM (T. Amman).

Contributions to the CPER Ritmea Project

As part of the CPER Ritmea project (Axis 2), I am responsible for acquiring, within the 2024 program, a robotized electric light commercial vehicle . This platform will enable further research on active wake control and autonomous vehicle control.

Additionally, I am in charge of acquiring a fuel cell hybrid test bench, dedicated to both low-level control (pressure, temperature regulation loops) and energy management (fuel cell <-> battery coupling). This test bench will complement our existing experimental resources and fits within the framework of a collaboration with the Mechanics department (C. Morin) on thermal management and its integration with energy management (ANR Altos).

ANR Reactive (Real world-Enhanced Assistance & ConTrol for Intermediate VEhicles)

Human Hybrid Lightweight Vehicles (HHLV) offer an efficient, low-emission alternative for
short to medium distances, particularly in dense urban areas where space is limited, and conventional
vehicles are less practical. Being an active mobility solution, they allow cycling but being decently powered, some of these vehicles can reach speeds of 50 km/h or higher. With significantly different performances and designs, they can serve a variety of purposes, ranging from taxi-like services and personal transport to integration into logistics systems for first and last-mile delivery, making them highly adaptable to various urban mobility needs. They are already in use by some major logistics players (Amazon, DHL, UPS).

The REACTIVE project studies three coupled aspects of these vehicles: energy management, aerodynamic, and lateral control.
