FLIGHTDECKCONTROL

Experimental and numerical study of flow control on the flight deck of a frigate

Landing helicopters on the aft deck of frigate-type ships places a heavy workload on pilots. The presence of highly turbulent zones in the wake of the ship's superstructures, deck movements, sea state, helicopter performance and wake, visibility, and the pilot's physical condition are all parameters contributing to his workload.

The wind conditions (direction and speed) for which landing is feasible are dictated by SHOLs (Ship Helicopter Operational Limitations); their establishment is based on pilots' assessment in real conditions.

The main aim of the project is to extend the SHOL (Ship Helicopter Operational Limitations) of helicopters during landing procedures with flow control. To achieve this, flow characterization and aerology improvement (limiting recirculation phenomena and turbulence levels) with an active blowing control system are envisaged.
