UPHF ranked in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023!
This second participation in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2023 World University Ranking is a success for UPHF.
This one includes 1,799 universities (2,500 respondents) across 104 countries and territories, making it the largest and most diverse university ranking to date.
Institutions must meet three key criteria to be included in the ranking:
- Publish a sufficient number of academic articles over a 5-year period - threshold of 1,000 articles.
- Teach undergraduate students.
- Work on a broad range of topics.
3 sources of information are used to compile the Times Higher Education World University Rankings:
- Institutional data provided directly by higher education institutions,
- The bibliometric data provided by their partner Elsevier from their bibliographic and bibliometric database 'Scopus',
- The University Reputation Survey THE sent directly to academics. This survey examines the perceived prestige of institutions in teaching and research.
The result is based on 13 indicators that measure an institution's performance in five areas: teaching (30%), research (30%), knowledge transfer and research influence (30%), international outreach (7.5%), and innovation (2.5%).
42 French institutions appear in the 2023 edition of the Times Higher Education World University Ranking, including three in the top 100.
This year, EPE UPHF ranks in the rankings (1201-1500)
Sylvie Retailleau, Minister of ESR, "congratulates all 42 French institutions ranked and especially the researchers, teacher-researchers, teachers and research support staff who make these results possible through their daily work."
"This 2023 ranking illustrates France's scientific and educational influence on the international stage," says the MESR, adding that this edition confirms its policy:
The ranking list "illustrates the fruit of the State's long-term investment policy in research and education through the various future investment programs and France 2030 (Idex, I-site, Excellences, etc.). This funding has contributed to the structural transformation of these institutions, to the enrichment of their training offer and to the definition of their scientific signature.
Similarly, nine of the ten experimental public institutions (EPEs) officially created before 2022 are among the 42 institutions ranked.
These results also show how essential the levers made available, particularly under the research programming law, are for the recognition of the scientific potential of French universities in the years to come."

At the scale of the Hauts-de-France Region, UPHF is among the 4 institutions ranked in THE World University Rankings 2023.
What's next for UPHF? Analyze our indicators in order to identify action levers to progress in the next ranking, particularly with the support of the PIA4 ExcellenceS EURO-Tell project that we won last summer and the EUNICE Alliance, whose rise to prominence has begun to generate Research collaborations.

42 établissements français apparaissent dans l'édition 2023 du World University Ranking du Times Higher Education, dont 3 dans le top 100.
Cette année, l’EPE UPHF se classe dans le rang (1201-1500).
Sylvie Retailleau, ministre de l’ESR, « félicite l’ensemble des 42 établissements français classés et tout particulièrement les chercheurs, enseignants-chercheurs, enseignants et personnels d’appui à la recherche qui permettent ces résultats par leur travail quotidien ».
« Ce palmarès 2023 illustre le rayonnement scientifique et pédagogique de la France à l’international », indique le MESR, ajoutant que cette édition confirme sa politique :
- Le palmarès « illustre le fruit de la politique d’investissement de l’État en recherche et en formation sur le temps long avec les différents programmes d’investissement d’avenir et France 2030 (Idex, I-site, Excellences…). 16 des 17 établissements porteurs d’une initiative d’excellence sont ainsi présents dans le classement, dont huit dans le top 500. Ces financements ont contribué à la transformation structurelle des établissements, à l’enrichissement de leur offre de formation et à la définition de leur signature scientifique.
- De même, neuf des dix établissements publics expérimentaux (EPE) officiellement créés avant 2022 figurent parmi les 42 établissements classés.
- Ces résultats montrent aussi combien les leviers mis à disposition, notamment dans le cadre de la loi de programmation de la recherche, sont essentiels pour la reconnaissance du potentiel scientifique des universités françaises dans les années à venir. »
