Filmmaker Arnaud Desplechin at UPHF

L'Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France is delighted to welcome Arnaud Desplechin for a screening-debate of his film Roubaix, une lumière (2019) as part of the Université des Savoirs Partagés.
Tuesday February 13, 6pm at Arenberg Creative Mine.

The North through the eyes of cinema

After questioning the institutions of the Fifth Republic and their challenges in the face of modernity with Jean-Louis Debré's talk, after tackling the theme of the prison world beyond the fantasies it generates through Plana Radenovic's analysis, the agenda of the Université des Savoirs Partagés conference cycle is expanded with another exceptional event!

To explore the theme of "Le Nord à travers le temps du cinéma", on February 13 the university will host a screening of the feature film  Roubaix, une lumière,  followed by a discussion orchestrated by Line Szende and Arnaud Huftier, lecturers at the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France.
. The talented director Arnaud Desplechin will honor us with his presence.

The event will take place at the remarkable Arenberg Creative Mine, located in the heart of the mining town, a center of excellence in image and digital media and a testament to local history that has hosted numerous film shoots and large-scale events since 2015.
Before its rehabilitation, the site was notably used as a set for the feature film Germinal, directed in 1993 by Claude Berri.

Arnaud Desplechin

Arnaud Desplechin is one of the most important and recognized French filmmakers of his generation in France and around the world.
His work has won numerous awards, including the César for Best Director for Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse in 2016.

His cinema acutely explores the bonds of friendship and family, the power of creative desire and amorous longing, social complexity and the violence of history on women and men.

He has succeeded in creating a "cinema family" with recurring characters and actors (Mathieu Amalric, Emmanuelle Devos, Denis Podalydès but also Léa Seydoux or Catherine Deneuve) in films that are partly autobiographical. He moves away from this vein, notably in his English-language films (Esther Kahn in 2000 with Summer Phénix or Jimmy P. in 2013 with Benicio del Toro) or adaptations of novels (Tromperie, adapted from Philip Roth, in 2021).
Among his formal sources is the nouvelle vague; like François Truffaut, he is nourished by literature and cinematic erudition, which is how he offers narratives whose emotion is preserved as much by the memory of a landscape as a face, the tremor of a chosen word or a camera movement.

Arnaud Desplechin was born in Roubaix, his city and our region of Hauts-de-France is represented in several of his films from a variety of points of view: L'Aimée (2007) is a documentary about his parents' house on the eve of being put up for sale; Un conte de Noël - Roubaix ! (2009) is a family drama; and Roubaix, une lumière (2019) is a crime thriller, the first in his filmography, nominated seven times for the 2020 Césars and for which Roschdy Zem won the Best Actor award.
These multiple viewpoints create a composite image of the city and region, and we look forward to (re)seeing his film and hearing him talk about it.
