Artificial Intelligence: how to combine innovation and ethics?

On February 22 at 6pm, the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France will be delighted to welcome Pierre Giorgini, engineer and former rector of the Université Catholique de Lille.

Mr. Giorgini will address the sensitive issue of Artificial Intelligence and how it is profoundly transforming our society, arousing both fascination and concern.
Media, education, creation, art, communication, etc... There are many fields in which artificial intelligence has already established itself as an indispensable tool.
This technological revolution, characterized by systems capable of learning and making autonomous decisions, raises concerns linked to employment, privacy, security and of course ethics.
As a true specialist on the subject, Pierre Giorgini will explore the various dimensions of AI's impact on our daily lives, and offer an analysis of the legitimate fears that accompany this rapid technological evolution.

Portrait of Pierre Giorgini

Pierre Giorgini has forged a remarkable career combining responsibilities in higher education, significant contributions to innovation, and ethical commitment, distinguishing himself in particular through his leadership at the Catholic University of Lille and his achievements in the telecommunications industry.

After directing a higher education and research department at the Institut National des Télécommunications Sud Paris, he founded the ENIC, a leading engineering school, (now Telecom Lille).
In 2012, Pierre Giorgini became President-Rector of the Université Catholique de Lille, after having headed the ISEN group (Institut Supérieur de l'Électronique et du Numérique).
Under his leadership, the "Cathotique de Lille" was founded in 1993. Under his leadership, the "Catho" is developing a range of pedagogical, technological and social innovations within dedicated locations, the innovative ecosystems, or tiers lieux, learning spaces supported by teacher-researchers, students and businesses.

Author of La Transition fulgurante, vers un bouleversement systémique du monde (Bayard, 2014), MERI ethics prize 2015, La Fulgurante recréation (Bayard, 2016), and Au Crépuscule des Lieux (Bayard, 2016), in 2018 he publishes La tentation d'Eugénie.
L'Humain face à son destin
, (Bayard) which will receive the Prix spécial de l'Académie des Sciences morales et politiques française.
He takes an impassioned yet lucid look at innovation and, more broadly, at the tremendous changes it brings about or accompanies in companies and societies more generally, but above all at the ethical challenges they engender.
His latest book, The contributory revolution was published in English in the USA by WILEY in 2022. Vers une civilisation de l'algorithme - regard chrétien sur un défi éthique written with Thierry Magnin, was published the same year in France by Bayard.

Pierre Giorgini is a researcher and member of the chair "Sciences Technosciences et foi à l'heure de l'écologie intégrale" at the Catho de Lille.
He is a Doctor Honoris Causa of Hope-University, Liverpool, and an Officer of the Légion d'Honneur.
He is a telecommunications engineer and a Director of the "Ecologie Intégrale" project at the Catho de Lille. He is a telecommunications engineer and Director of Studies and Research at the Télécom higher education establishment which became Mines Télécom.
